  32 <H1>2.6 Image Pane</H1>
  33 <P>The image pane is the region of the main window that displays the
  34 selected image. The image pane allows adjustment of display size and
  35 orientation; it also provides several methods to manipulate the image
  36 with the mouse and keyboard.</P>
  37 <P><BR><BR>
  38 </P>
  39 <P><U>Image display</U></P>
  40 <P>The image is drawn to the screen as it is decoded from disk. The
  41 image can be panned and zoomed while it is still loading. Image
  42 adjustment operations for rotation, mirror, and flip will delay until
  43 the image is completed. The adjustment queue will remember one
  44 operation and will retain the most recently requested function, which
  45 will be performed once the image has finished loading.</P>
  46 <P>The quality of the image, especially when using the zoom feature,
  47 is dependent on the settings that are available on the <A HREF="10_2_image.html">Image
  48 tab</A> of the preferences dialog.</P>
  49 <P>To increase the speed of loading the next image when navigating
  50 the image list in sequence, enable the <A HREF="10_2_image.html">Preload
  51 next image</A> option.</P>
  52 <P><BR><BR>
  53 </P>
  54 <P><U>Image panning and manipulation</U></P>
  55 <P STYLE="text-decoration: none">When the image size is larger than
  56 the image pane, the visible region can be changed with the keyboard
  57 or mouse. The keyboard can also be used to adjust the orientation of
  58 the image.</P>
  59 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in"><SPAN STYLE="text-decoration: none"><B>Keyboard</B>:
  60 Use the arrow keys to pan the image in the desired direction, to
  61 increase the panning speed hold down the Shift key while pressing an
  62 arrow key.</SPAN> Press Control and an arrow key to move to the
  63 respective edge of the image. The image can only be panned with the
  64 keyboard when the image has the focus, indicated by a dotted line
  65 surrounding the image pane.</P>
  66 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">To scale the image size, use the [+]
  67 or [=] key to zoom in and the [-] key to zoom out. The [X] or keypad
  68 [*] key will scale the image to fit the available display area, the
  69 [Z] or keypad [/] key will reset the zoom to original image size.
  70 There are also keys to select a preset zoom factor: [1] = 1:1, [2] =
  71 2:1, [3] =3:1, [4] = 4:1, [7] = 1:4, [8] = 1:3, and [9] = 1:2.</P>
  72 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">To rotate the image clockwise 90
  73 degrees press the &ldquo;]&rdquo; key, to rotate counterclockwise 90
  74 degrees press the &ldquo;[&ldquo; key. To rotate the image 180
  75 degrees use [Shift] + [R], the image can also be flipped horizontally
  76 or vertically with the respective [Shift] + [M] (mirror) and [Shift]
  77 + [F] (flip) keys.</P>
  78 <P STYLE="margin-left: 1.58in"><I>Note: The rotation, mirror, and
  79 flip functions will not change the image file on disk.</I></P>
  80 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in"><SPAN STYLE="text-decoration: none"><B>Mouse</B>:</SPAN>
  81 Press the primary mouse button on the image and hold it, then move
  82 the mouse to pan the image in the desired direction. Releasing the
  83 mouse button will stop the panning operation. The mouse wheel can
  84 also be used to scroll the image when holding down the [Shift] key
  85 (*).</P>
  86 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">To scale the image size hold down the
  87 [Control] key and scroll the mouse wheel up to zoom in, or down to
  88 zoom out.</P>
  89 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in"><B>Smooth Scroll:</B> To start the
  90 smooth scroll function hold down the [Shift] key and click the
  91 primary mouse button. An icon will appear at the location of the
  92 mouse pointer, the mouse can then be positioned to pan the image. The
  93 image will pan in the direction of the mouse pointer relative to the
  94 icon. The pan speed will increase in proportion to the distance that
  95 the pointer is from the center of the icon. To end the smooth scroll
  96 function click the primary mouse button within the image pane.</P>
  97 <P><BR><BR>
  98 </P>
  99 <P><U>Navigation</U></P>
 100 <P STYLE="font-weight: medium">The displayed image can be changed to
 101 the next or previous image using the keyboard or mouse.</P>
 102 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in"><B>Keyboard</B>: The Page Down and
 103 Page Up keys will change the image to the next or previous image,
 104 respectively, in the list. The Home and End keys will jump to the
 105 first and last image, respectively. When the image has the focus, the
 106 Space and Back Space keys can also be used to change the image.</P>
 107 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in"><B>Mouse</B>: To change to the next
 108 image in the list click the left mouse button, click the middle mouse
 109 button to change to the previous image. The mouse wheel can also be
 110 used to change the current image (*).</P>

 113 <P><U>Context menu</U></P>
 114 <P>Right clicking the mouse or pressing the menu key while the image
 115 has the focus will display a menu. The menu functions will perform
 116 the same as those that match the window's <A HREF="2_2_menus.html">menu
 117 bar</A>, however a few functions are unique to the context menu:</P>
 118 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in"><B>View in new window:</B> Opens a new
 119 window containing a second copy of the current image.</P>
 120 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in"><B>Pause slide show</B>, <B>Continue
 121 slide show</B>: Controls the pause state of an active slide show, the
 122 text of the menu will change to reflect the action that will be
 123 performed.</P>

 126 <P><U>Drag and Drop</U></P>
 127 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">Files and folders can be dropped onto
 128 the image pane, dropping a file will display the file and dropping a
 129 folder will change the main window to display the contents of the
 130 folder. When dropping multiple items on the image pane, only the
 131 first item in the list will be used, all additional items will be
 132 ignored.</P>
 133 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">A drag and drop operation can be
 134 initiated from the image pane with the middle mouse button, the
 135 dragged item will contain the file path of the displayed image.</P>
