  31 <H1>4.3 Delete</H1>
  32 <P>To delete a file in Geeqie press Control + D, or select Delete
  33 from the file menu. Delete is also available in the context menu of
  34 all images and files. If <A HREF="10_6_advanced.html">Enable delete
  35 key</A> is enabled in Options, pressing the Delete key can also be
  36 used to delete files.</P>
  37 <P>The behavior when starting a delete operation depends on the
  38 <A HREF="10_6_advanced.html">Confirm file delete</A> option in
  39 Options. If the option is enabled a dialog will appear to confirm the
  40 operation, if it is not enabled the files will be deleted without
  41 further interaction.  In all cases if the file is unable to be
  42 deleted you will be notified by a dialog.</P>

  45 <P><U>Confirm delete dialog</U></P>
  46 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">The dialog that appears when delete
  47 confirmation is enabled will show the file or files to be deleted. To
  48 delete the file press Enter or activate the Delete button. Pressing
  49 Escape or activating the Cancel button will close the dialog and
  50 abort the operation.</P>
  51 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">When deleting multiple files, the
  52 dialog will include two arrow buttons to step the image preview
  53 through the list of files to be deleted. Initially the preview will
  54 be blank, activate the right arrow to display the first file.</P>
  55 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">The dialog will also display the
  56 status of the <A HREF="10_6_advanced.html">Safe Delete</A> feature.
  57 Use this to determine if a file to be Deleted will be immediately
  58 lost, or if the file can possibly be recovered from the Safe Delete
  59 folder.</P>
  60 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">If a file is unable to be deleted, a
  61 dialog will appear to notify you. If multiple files were selected and
  62 any remain, the dialog will include a Continue button, activating
  63 this button or pressing Enter will delete the remaining files.
  64 Pressing Escape or activating the Cancel button will close the dialog
  65 and the remaining files will not be deleted.</P>

  68 <P><U>Safe Delete</U></P>
  69 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">Geeqie includes a feature to
  70 temporarily store deleted files in a selected folder, to use this
  71 feature enable <A HREF="10_6_advanced.html">Safe Delete</A> on the
  72 advanced tab of the preferences dialog. Safe Delete includes these
  73 options:</P>
  74 <P STYLE="margin-left: 1.58in"><B>Folder:</B> The folder to use for
  75 temporarily retaining deleted files.</P>
  76 <P STYLE="margin-left: 1.58in"><B>Maximum size:</B> The maximum
  77 amount of disk space to use when storing deleted files, in megabytes.</P>
  78 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">When the total size of the deleted
  79 files stored in the Safe Delete folder exceeds the Maximum size, the
  80 oldest files are removed from the folder to make space for the new
  81 deleted files. <SPAN STYLE="font-style: normal">Files moved to the
  82 Safe Delete folder are prefixed with a six digit number in the
  83 format:</SPAN></P>
  84 <P STYLE="margin-left: 1.58in"><I>nnnnnn_FILENAME</I></P>
  85 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in; font-style: normal">This is used to
  86 distinguish which files to remove first when clearing space for new
  87 files. The digit counter increments with each deleted file.</P>
  88 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in; font-style: normal">To clear the
  89 contents of the Safe Delete folder, activate the Clear button
  90 provided for this purpose on the <A HREF="10_6_advanced.html">Advanced
  91 tab</A> in Options.</P>
