  32 <P>GQview provides a utility to find images that have similar
  33 attributes or content.</P>
  34 <P>To display a new Find Duplicates Window press D or select Find
  35 duplicates from the File menu.</P>

  38 <P><U>Adding files to be compared</U></P>
  39 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">Add files to be compared using drag
  40 and drop. Drop files or folders onto the Find Duplicates window to
  41 add them to the list of files to compare. When one or more folders
  42 are dropped onto the window a menu will appear allowing you to choose
  43 the desired action:</P>
  44 <P STYLE="margin-left: 1.58in"><B>Add contents:</B> The contents of
  45 dropped folders will added to the window. <BR><B>Add contents
  46 recursive:</B> The contents of dropped folders and all sub folders
  47 will be added to the window.<BR><B>Skip folders:</B> Ignore folders
  48 contained in the drop list.</P>
  49 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">When files are added to the window,
  50 the comparison is restarted to include the new files.</P>

  53 <P><U>Comparison methods</U></P>
  54 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">The attribute to use for two images to
  55 match can be selected with the &ldquo;Compare by:&rdquo; drop down
  56 menu. Each method is explained below:</P>
  57 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in"><B>Name:</B> The file name.</P>
  58 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in"><B>Size:</B> The file size.</P>
  59 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in"><B>Date:</B> The file date.</P>
  60 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in"><B>Dimensions:</B> The image
  61 dimensions.</P>
  62 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in"><B>Checksum:</B> The MD5 file
  63 checksum.</P>
  64 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in"><B>Path:</B> The complete path to
  65 file.</P>
  66 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in"><B>Similarity (high):</B> Very similar
  67 image content.</P>
  68 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in"><B>Similarity:</B> Similar image

  71 similar image content.</P>

  73 image content, the value to use to consider two images a match is
  74 configured in the <A HREF="10_6_advanced.html">Advanced tab</A> of
  75 the preferences dialog by setting the &ldquo;Custom similarity
  76 threshold&rdquo;.</P>

  79 <P><U>Results list</U></P>
  80 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">Files that match with the selected
  81 comparison method will appear in the list. Matching files are grouped
  82 in alternating color.</P>
  83 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">The order of the result list can not
  84 be changed, files will appear in the order of the search. When
  85 comparing by image content similarity, the matching groups will be
  86 sorted by order of rank starting with the files that are most
  87 similar.</P>
  88 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">A <B>context menu</B> is available for
  89 the result list by right clicking the mouse or pressing the Menu key
  90 when a row has the focus.</P>

 332 result list will only contain dimension information when comparing by
 333 dimensions, or when the data is easily available from memory or has
 334 been read from the cache.</P>

 337 <P><U>Status bar</U></P>
 338 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">Along the bottom of the Find
 339 Duplicates window is an area that displays the count of files
 340 contained in the window, and the number of files in the result list.</P>
 341 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">The status bar will also display the
 342 status of an active compare operation using the progress bar. A
 343 compare operation involves 2 or 3 stages, depending on the type of
 344 comparison. These are the stages in order:</P>
 345 <P STYLE="margin-left: 1.58in">1) If necessary, extra data is read
 346 into memory for the comparison stage, the progress bar will indicate
 347 this stage with text that resembles &ldquo;reading dimensions...&rdquo;,
 348 &ldquo;reading checksums...&rdquo;, or &ldquo;reading similarity
 349 data...&rdquo;. <BR>2) The images are compared using the selected
 350 method, the progress bar will indicate this stage with the text
 351 &ldquo;comparing...&rdquo;.<BR>3) The results are sorted for display,
 352 the progress bar will indicate this stage with the text &ldquo;sorting...&rdquo;.</P>
 353 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">Stage 1 is only used for the
 354 Dimensions, Checksum, and Similarity compare methods.</P>
 355 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">If the time to complete a stage will
 356 be significant, an estimated time to completion will also be
 357 displayed in the progress bar. The estimated time only refers to the
 358 current stage, other stages are not included in the estimate. The
 359 time estimate is displayed using the format MINUTES:SECONDS.</P>

 367 <P><U>Compare two file sets</U></P>
 368 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">Sometimes it is useful to compare one
 369 group of files to another, different group of files. Enable this
 370 check box to compare two groups of files. When enabled a second list
 371 will appear, files can be added to this list using the same methods
 372 for the main list.</P>
 373 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">When comparing two file sets the
 374 results list will display matches between the two lists. For each
 375 match group, the first file is always from the main group, and the
 376 remaining files are always from the second group.</P>

 379 <P><U>Drag and Drop</U></P>
 380 <P STYLE="margin-left: 0.79in">Drag and drop can be initiated with
 381 the primary or middle mouse buttons. Dragging a file that is selected
 382 will include all selected files in the drag. Dragging a file that is
 383 not selected will first change the selection to the dragged file, and
 384 clear the previous selection.</P>
